For Handelian string playing of real vitality, rhythmic verve and dramatic engagement at point-blank range, head to the tiny cloisters in the gardens of Iford Manor... Here is articulation so smart that you could cut your finger on it, a rich tonal range and an abundance of exuberantly improvised decorations from leader Bojan Cicic.
Frankly, I could not fault the playing in any way. It was at the height of contemporary Baroque performance practice executed exquisitely, one quite forgot modern instruments were not being used! Three cheers also to the masterly leadership of Bojan Cicic, an outstanding musician with a great career emerging.
It was a blessing that Bojan Cicic arrived in Hertz Hall. The Croatian baroque violinist performed virtuosic 17th-century string repertoire by composers such as Bertali and Biber, who would never have enjoyed such lovely acoustics… it was as if the road to the ear was paved with velvet.
It is striking how exclusive the Champions League of baroque violinist remains... Croatian baroque violinist Bojan Cicic stands on the threshold of that pantheon.
